On April 30th, Ignas Vėgėlė, a candidate for the post of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, visited the EESC and presented his key insights on foreign policy and national security.

“Any foreign policy is based on two main principles – state security and economic relations, its development,” emphasized the candidate.

Speaking about Lithuania’s relationship with international organizations, he mentioned that Lithuania must remain sovereign and transfer as little of its powers as possible elsewhere. Foreign policy must be carried out in such a way that the independence and sovereignty of Lithuania are always ensured.

The candidate’s approach to the benefits of Lithuania’s EU membership, future reforms, proposals to change the structure of its institutions, changes in the voting system, as well as EU funding mechanisms, was also presented.

While discussing security issues, I. Vėgėlė emphasized that while strengthening its security, Lithuania must at the same time seek to deter any conflict within the country. The long-term strategy towards Belarus and the security of Ukraine were also singled out as factors strengthening Lithuania’s security.
